FAQ

GENERAL

+ What is Pitchtape?

Pitchtape is a digital platform for startup founders to create and share a video pitch, and for venture investors to discover and connect with the next generation of innovators.

We also provide a suite of tools and resources for founders to start, build and grow their startups, and for investors to invest intelligently across all types of startup investment structures.

+ How does it work?

Through our platform, founders create what we call a “pitchtape” - a dynamic online pitch profile consisting of three 60-second videos telling investors what they’re doing, who they are, and why they’re doing it, along with short-form answers to standard pitch deck topics.

Each pitchtape is then presented to our network of investors in a private web and mobile feed, curated for each investor based on their selected investment criteria. Investors can simply click a button if they like a pitch, which will notify the founders and give both sides the chance to connect to advance the fundraising process.

Visit the Founder page and the Investor page for more info.

+ Why does Pitchtape exist?

After several years working with startups and investors, we kept seeing the struggle on both sides of the table in the early days of the fundraising process. Founders struggling to get the time of day from the right investors, and investors struggling to efficiently source and screen the right founders. So we set out to create the most personalized, modern, time-saving way for the industry to find founder-investor fit.

Visit the Our Story page for more info.

+ Who is Pitchtape for?

Pitchtape is designed to best operate in the context of (1) a fast growing startup company looking to attract outside capital from investors to develop, validate and grow a scalable business, (2) a sophisticated investor looking for an opportunity to connect with founders of fast growing startup companies, and (3) a startup accelerator or incubator program looking for founders of fast growing startup companies to join their program.

+ Who is Pitchtape not for?

Companies that manufacture or sell the following items are prohibited: drugs, discriminatory material, illegal products or services, political campaigns, pornographic material, tobacco products, weapons, or other items we deem inappropriate for our platform.

+ How does Pitchtape initiate a connection between founders and investors?

First, a founder creates and submits a pitchtape to be listed in the investor feed. Second, an investor can view the pitchtape in their feed and click to connect with the founder if interested. Third, if the investor clicks connect, the founder receives a notification with the investor’s name and email address. Fourth, if the interest is mutual, the founder can send an email to the investor. Fifth, both sides can view and manage the connection in their personalized dashboard.

+ Are investments made directly through the platform? Is this a crowdfunding site?

No. Pitchtape does not (1) allow startups to offer or sell any securities directly through the platform; (2) allow investors to make investments in startups directly through the platform; (3) provide advice about the merits of a particular opportunity or venture; (4) receive any compensation contingent upon the outcome or completion of any securities transaction; (5) participate in any negotiations between founders and investors; (6) directly assist founders or investors with the completion of any transaction; (7) handle funds or securities involved in completing a transaction; (8) claim to provide any securities-related services other than a listing or matching service; or (9) engage in the business of buying and selling securities for its own account.

Pitchtape is not a crowdfunding portal, broker-dealer, investment adviser or other securities-related intermediary. Pitchtape is not registered with the SEC or a member of FINRA.

You are solely responsible for complying with all applicable law regarding any transaction in which you may engage, including without limitation the determination of whether any investor is an accredited investor and whether any investment complies with the terms of any United States law (or any law of any US state or foreign jurisdiction) or meets the criteria for any exemption from registration under any securities laws and/or disclosure available thereunder.

Visit our Terms of Service for more info.

+ What is an Accredited Investor?

In general, an accredited investor includes (1) individuals who earned income exceeding US$200K individually or US$300K jointly with a spouse in the two years prior to the offering with the reasonable expectation for the same in the year of the offering, (2) individuals who have a net worth north of $1 million (either alone or jointly with a spouse, and excluding the value of a primary residence), (3) entities with over $5 million in assets (such as a venture fund), and (4) entities in which all of the equity owners are accredited investors.
